To access and log in to an electronic mailbox, a person must successfully identify and authenticate themselves.
Identification is the process by which a person declares their identity using a personal identifier.
Authentication is the process by which a public authority verifies the declared identity by checking the correctness and validity of the personal identifier and authenticator. Successful authentication is a prerequisite for a person to access the resources and data of an information system, as well as electronic communications.
The following may be used as authenticators:
The individual for whom an electronic mailbox has been established—the mailbox owner—is entitled to access and manage the electronic mailbox of a natural person. In addition to the mailbox owner, another person authorised by the owner is also entitled to access and manage the mailbox, within the scope of the authorisation granted by the owner.
The mailbox owner grants access and management rights to the electronic mailbox, and makes changes to those rights, using the designated function within the electronic mailbox.
