Electronic mailboxes are used for electronic communication between citizens and businesses and public authorities. The purpose of introducing electronic mailboxes is to make communication with public administration more efficient and faster.
What is an electronic mailbox?
An electronic mailbox, as defined by the e-Government Act, is an electronic storage facility in which electronic messages and notifications are stored. An electronic mailbox enables citizens and business entities to communicate electronically with public administration.
An electronic mailbox for natural persons is established automatically for citizens of the Slovak Republic who have reached the age of 18.
Each entity is provided with only one electronic mailbox, and its establishment is free of charge.
If a natural person is also an entrepreneur or a public authority, or if a public authority is also a legal entity that does not exercise public authority, a separate electronic mailbox is established for each of these legal statuses.
A typical example of establishing multiple mailboxes for one person/entity is a notary, who will have two mailboxes established: one as a natural person and one as a public authority.
In order for an electronic mailbox to be used for electronic delivery, it must be activated for delivery.
Electronic mailboxes of public authorities are activated for delivery at the same time as they are established. Citizens and natural persons – entrepreneurs may request activation at any time. All electronic mailboxes of legal entities registered in the Commercial Register and having their registered office in the Slovak Republic have been mandatorily activated for delivery since 1 July 2017. Since 1 June 2020, the same process has also applied to electronic mailboxes of legal entities that are not registered in the Commercial Register. More information...Opens in a new window
