The registry office issues the birth certificate automatically if the parents have signed the agreement on the child's first name and surname.
From 1 August 2026, your birth certificate will also be issued electronically.
Agreement on the child's first name and surname
From 1 August 2026, it will be possible to sign the Agreement on the Child's First Name and Surname electronically at the maternity hospital using an eID. The electronic form replaces the paper agreement, but the paper agreement remains available as an alternative—the parents may also sign it on paper at the hospital. If the father's signature is missing, he will receive an electronic notification asking him to confirm the agreement. Once the agreement is signed electronically or on paper, the parents will receive electronic confirmation and a copy in their electronic mailbox.
Delivery of the birth certificate
Paper birth certificate
You may collect it in person from the registry office responsible for your permanent residence or have it delivered by post if you request this at the hospital. The competent registry office will send the birth certificate within four to five days of the child's birth to the mother's permanent address, for delivery to the addressee only.
Electronic birth certificate
The electronic birth certificate (eBC) will be delivered automatically to your electronic mailbox in a readable format that can be used when communicating with public authorities.
If your birth certificate was not delivered
If you did not collect the birth certificate—for example, because of a longer hospital stay—you may collect it from the registry office responsible for the child's place of birth.
The electronic birth certificate remains available even if you do not collect the paper birth certificate.
You can change the delivery address using the electronic services:
You may determine paternity if you are not married and did not make a declaration determining paternity before the child's birth. Paternity may be determined:
Electronically
To use the service, you need:
an electronic identity card with a chip (eID),
a qualified electronic signature (QES),
the required documents (for example, information about the dissolution of a previous marriage, or the husband's marriage certificate or death certificate).
From 1 August 2026, the other parent can confirm the first parent's electronic submission directly online. After one parent submits the form, the other parent will receive a notification in their electronic mailbox asking them to confirm the information. The form will be pre-filled from the first parent's submission, and the other parent may confirm it electronically or in person at the registry office.
In person at the registry office
Both parents must attend the registry office and submit:
identity cards,
the required documents.
If the mother is divorced or widowed, she must also submit:
the divorce judgment,
or the marriage certificate,
the husband's death certificate.
If the parents do not agree
If the parents do not determine paternity by a joint declaration, an application to determine paternity may be filed by:
the child,
the mother,
the man who claims to be the father.
Paternity will then be determined by a court.

After birth, the child is automatically registered with the mother's health insurance company. You do not need to register the child yourself.
Registering with a paediatrician
The child must be registered with a paediatrician within three days of discharge from the maternity hospital.
If the child remains in hospital longer, you may contact the paediatrician while the child is still hospitalised.
You will agree with the paediatrician on the date and place of the first appointment.
What you need when registering with a paediatrician
Healthcare for the child is provided on the basis of an agreement on the provision of healthcare. To conclude the agreement, you need to provide the paediatrician with:
the child's personal identification number,
the health insurance company.
Good to know:
Concluding an agreement with a paediatrician is a statutory condition for receiving the childbirth allowance.

If the child is born in the Slovak Republic, their permanent residence is automatically registered at the mother's address. You do not need to report anything.
Changing permanent residence
You can change the child's permanent residence at the municipal or local authority.
You must also report the new household member for the purposes of the municipal waste fee.
Warning
If the child is born abroad:
permanent residence is not assigned automatically,
you must register the child at the residence registration office,
you can register the child only after a personal identification number has been assigned.

The childbirth allowance is a state social benefit that helps cover basic expenses for a newborn child.
You do not need to apply
The allowance is processed automatically. You do not need to submit an application or provide documents.
The Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (the 'labour office') responsible for the mother's permanent residence will begin the proceedings on the date it receives information that the child has been entered in the Register of Natural Persons.
How approval works
the labour office verifies most information automatically,
it usually decides on the allowance within 60 days,
if information is missing, the office will ask you to provide it.
Payment of the allowance
The allowance will be paid:
to a bank account or an account at a branch of a foreign bank in the Slovak Republic,
or to the address you provided.
It may also be sent to the same account or address to which you receive the pregnancy benefit or pregnancy scholarship.
Amount of the allowance
The current amount of the childbirth allowance is:
EUR 829.86—for a child born from the first to the fourth delivery,
EUR 151.37—for a child born from the fifth or any subsequent delivery.
If several children are born at the same time, the allowance is increased by EUR 75.69 for each child.
If the child was born abroad
The allowance is not processed automatically. You must submit:
an official translation of the child's birth certificate (an official translation from Czech into Slovak is not required) or other proof of birth,
confirmation of attendance at gynaecological examinations, the birth order and any departure of the mother and child from the maternity hospital without the healthcare provider's consent,
a document confirming whether the allowance or another benefit of the same type was or was not paid abroad.
Important information
Entitlement to the allowance expires 12 months after the child's birth.

Allowance from an employer or municipality
In addition to the state allowance, some cities and municipalities may provide a one-off allowance following the birth of a child.
You can check the conditions and amount of the allowance on your city or municipality's website. The allowance does not have to be financial.
Conditions may vary considerably between municipalities—some provide financial support, while others offer a newborn package or in-kind assistance.
What to check
which documents and attachments you must submit,
the deadline for applying for the allowance,
when the allowance will be paid.
Allowance from an employer
If the mother is employed, inform the employer of the child's birth. Some employers provide a childbirth allowance.

The Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family responsible for the applicant's permanent residence—or temporary residence in the case of foreign nationals—also pays other family benefits.
Unlike the childbirth allowance, you must apply for these benefits—they are not granted automatically.
